How to Perform Water Drilling

Homeowners can as well perform shallow water drilling on their own using PVC as well as household water hoses.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to reach an aquifer when digging your well for irrigation or lawn watering. Just drill below the standing water level. These shallow water wells are suitable for home irrigation and gardening as well.

If you're interested in how to handle this process yourself, here's some steps to get you through.

1. For starters, you have to dig the bore hole. The 2 inch diameter PVC acts as the drill pipe. Run water from two hose pipes down the 2-inch diameter PVC as you gradually swivel the PVC pipe back and forth. Do note that the bottom section of the PVC pipe features cut teeth ends. The cut teeth ends at the bottom section will serve as your drill bit by digging away at the clay, sand or dirt and then the flowing water will transport the cuttings up in the annular gap between the PVC pipe and the hole to the top of the dug hole.

2. After drilling the bore hole, insert the well screen in the dug hole. You cannot simply pull the PVC drill pipe out of the hole and then put in the well screen pipe, given that more often than not sand will cave in the base of the hole. You might be wondering what a well screen is. Well, it is piece of pipe featuring a cluster of slits to allow for water penetration and not sand.

Ideally, it is recommended that you use a well screen constructed from PVC. By using a larger diameter PVC drill pipe than your well screen PVC pipe, you are able to insert the well screen prior to removing the drill pipe out of the hole. Construct your well screen pipe by slotting in a 1.25-inch diameter well screen to a 1.25-inch diameter PVC. The whole length of the well screen should be equal to the deepness of your hole.

3. Insert the 1.25 inch diameter well screen into the 2-inch diameter PVC drill pipe all the way down to the foot of the hole.

4. Pull the 2-inch diameter PVC drill pipe out of the hole and be careful not to pull out the 1.25 inch diameter well screen. This leaves you with just the 1.25-inch well screen inside the hole. This is basically your well.

5. Seal the well to stop surface contaminants from penetrating the ground water. Before applying cement, pour some sand at the foot of the foot of your well and then finish by pouring wet cement down the annular gap between the well screen pipe and the hole. Allow it to cure for a few days.

6. Lastly, attach a pump to the well screen pipe and start enjoying an operational well.
