Four Signs You Should Have Your Home Water Tested
When you think of a water testing lab, you likely think about it as it relates to community water services. You may think about how the labs test drinking water on a community level or make sure the water is treated properly. What you may not think of is how a water testing lab can help you as an individual household. Here are four signs that you should contact a water testing lab and have your home water tested.
Continuous Gastrointestinal Issues
One sign that your water may be contaminated is if you or your family members are having ongoing gastrointestinal issues. This can actually be a sign of bacteria in your water or that your well water, if you are on a well system, is contaminated with bacteria. If you notice that diarrhea, constipation, or stomach and intestinal aches are more frequent. Consider any changes in your diet, then consider having your water tested.
Water Placement
If you have recently bought a property and you found out the water well is near a septic tank or similar location you need to have your water tested. This is because the location of the well could be coming in contact with bacteria, feces, or other waste containing illness or bacteria. The issues resulting from this can be as minor as stomach aches to as major as infections caused by contamination. Consider moving your septic tank or water well depending on the outcome of the water testing lab results.
Stained Laundry
Sometimes your laundry can become stained due to cleaners that do not dissolve properly or dyes in certain laundry soaps and softeners. There are stains that may come up that are not related to these issues and instead could be a sign that the water has a high iron content. This iron can cause red or rusty colour stains on your clothing or may leave deposits in your washing machine. If you notice then, it's a sign you should have your water tested.
Water Odor
If you are suddenly noticing a strange odor in your water then it could be a sign of high chlorine counts or sulfur counts in the water. This can cause stomach issues as well as other health problems over time. If you notice and odor that doesn't go away soon, contact your local water testing lab. Your water department may have some information on why there is an odor, but if they don't you should have it tested.
